And not really that outdated, if your browser allows you to use add-ons like adblockers and tracking controls, while the dedicated apps are “dedicated” to spy on you in more detail than would be possible via a single application.

Java tried to be that one single application, but proprietary licenses and corporate bickering killed it’s chances.
