Except that nothing gets smarter😁 yes I think it’s a pretty standard pattern.
The main thing is that actions are the only thing that can update the system state (via reducer functions) and those modifications are synchronous. Any action that kicks off an asynchronous operation gets intercepted by listeners in the middleware and these will result in yet more actions (usually with payloads) that then modify the state.
