  1. BTDT…

I was just thinking today about the time I came back from vacation (back when I had vacations) to find out that a non-contract employee had deleted all my unit test code, blithely declaring, “I don’t believe in unit test.”

  2. Interestingly, I started seeing a lot more bugs in Google products after they blogged about how they use artificial intelligence to detect hot spots for bugs in their code, which they use to do more thorough code reviews.

  3. Well, my nemesis at that job was a regular employee, who wildly resented having to hole up in the big room with the mere contractors and the really nice guy (regular employee) who drove up from Clovis every week, plus she was an accomplished back-stabber (not just me, the really nice guy got slandered too). (It’s weird: supposedly we share an alma mater and must have overlapped in our sentences I mean academic years, and I thought I knew all the other “Lisa”s…never found her on the alumni list but maybe she’s an Elizabeth.)

I’ve since worked with a worse bully who oddly was also cavalier about testing, but he went to Caltech instead.

  4. Ramin Honary I was thinking about that too, when I read the comment about spaces and no bugs. We can just take Python, or why not FORTRAN.

    for x in range (0,3):

    print(x)

is not same as this in Python. Spaces matters.

    for x in range (0,3):

    print(x)

This FORTRAN-code: DO10I=12,100 and DO10I=12.100 are two valid statements in FORTRAN, but with two different interpretations. First is a loop and the second an assignment. And yes, it has been real bugs likt that in the wild.

Yes, you don’t need SPACE separators in FORTRAN. The two statements above are more commonly written with spaces like this.

    DO 10 I = 12, 100 and DO10I = 12.1

  5. FORTRAN has (had?) the more interesting feature of columns 73-80 (+) (and also 1-6 for different reasons). I once got to debug somebody’s code that had a 74-character line.
