This is nothing new; they’ve done this for previous JREs since at least 1.5. You want security updates you’ve got to either pay Orrible for v8 support or migrate to a newer JRE.
If I understand this correctly, Oracle is saying you can move to Java 9 and keep getting free updates – but if you need to or want to stay with Java 8, then updates are no longer free? In that case Oracle Will Charge for Java seems a bit misleading
They couldn’t figure out the model which can support R&D effort. Btw, the second they will start charging for Java, we can start the countdown before complete collapse.
IBM Java 8 will still be available and supported. (Kinda ironic that Aspera don’t mention that, since they’re an IBM company.)
