GOOGLEPLEX (Mountain View CA): apparently Sergey left his headlights on in the underground carpark again last night and so we have decided to shut down (Consumer) Google+.
Google cares about your privacy. This is why when Sergey locked his keys into his car we had to terminate Google Inbox.
What this also says, is that if Google can’t build a successful social media platform, nobody can. This is concerning as it leaves one big blue site as the main definition of what a social media platform looks and acts like. A lack of competition with deep pockets is not healthy for society or the tech industry.
And I’ll also miss the broad range of conversations in a platform with a half decent layout design. I find reddit ugly, but the closest in posting style.

They made some pretty big missteps along the way. There was no way a network called Google+ was going to go anywhere.

I’ll be following you on Twitter ( and do now, I don’t like it much and haven’t used it in a long time) and Medium and am looking for something else. Too many fragmented subsites seem more of an issue than the absence of alternatives and I don’t really feel like testing them all: Minds, Pluspora, Gab.ai, Mastodon, just to mention those that already came up.

Ralph Stoever it’s a mess but personally I think Twitter is better than joining another g+ clone. These sites will continue to come and go. I’ve already been through the shuttering of friendfeed and Google buzz. Smaller sites are going to go away quicker.
Medium is a good alternative.
