Mozilla released its beta version of Firefox 57, now called Firefox Quantum and sporting a new cleaner icon. I’ve been using it daily for six weeks in a raw test version, and I can confirm Mozilla isn’t blowing smoke — it really is faster than earlier Firefox versions, and it’s competitive with Chrome in a lot of situations when loading websites. If you care about a web not dominated by Google, give it a whirl.

This decision comes after several weeks of disappointment and uncertainty for our community. Although we still believe our BSD + Patents license provides some benefits to users of our projects, we acknowledge that we failed to decisively convince this community.

If there’s one thing more powerful than a globe-spanning Silicon Valley behemoth it’s a tidal wave of developers abandoning your product. Developer mindshare is something a tech company can gain and lose in just a matter of months.

In the wake of uncertainty about our license, we know that many teams went through the process of selecting an alternative library to React. We’re sorry for the churn. We don’t expect to win these teams back by making this change, but we do want to leave the door open.
