I notice a distinct lack of comment on whether the BD IP portfolio included in the sale is complete – I suspected from the beginning Google wasn’t interested in robot dogs so much as some of the algorithms that make them possible. Not surprising if they divest after sucking the marrow out.
Simple business rule: if it sounds exciting (e.g. robots, self-driving cars, VR), don’t go there: big crowds, stupid-high valuations, low revenue, and unrealistic expectations.
In 1998, there was nothing cool-sounding about a new, adaptive page-ranking algorithm: hence, Google.
Do no harm?

Is anyone actually in charge at Alphabet/Google, or do they make decisions by rolling a d20 and consulting a table ?

Maybe they thought that this stuff was better funded directly by the Pentagon.

Kevyn Winkless, I had the same idea. Algorithms to recognize the environment which can later be used for video or self driving cars.

I guess they’ll have to content themselves with just eliminating all jobs in the world wide transport industry with their self drive car robots.

Maybe they’ve just got something way better out the back…
