It’s getting increasingly difficult to move devices across borders. Coupled with other advice that recommends using “burner” phones to prevent unwarranted invasions of privacy, the key thing is to not carry any important data physically at all. Put everything in the cloud.

I am not entirely sanguine about the privacy of my data in the cloud, but putting it there generally also means it is backed up (e.g. Dropbox), which is an important side-effect (since device failure is the most common cause of losing data). Thus, I am convinced that putting your data in the cloud is the less bad option.

Yes it’s a bad but less bad option. Using technology has always really been a case of choosing the least bad option.

You could use your own “cloud” server (http://nextcloud.com, ownCloud) or a provider outside the US like mailbox.org e.g.

Must be an oldish image. That laptop has a DVD drive & a spinning disk hard drive. I can’t figure out what’s going on with the battery though; I can see where there must be three modules in the pack, but I don’t see the usual 18650 cylindrical cells in them. LiPo slabs instead, I guess, but that’s a newer thing.
