  1. The part about it being a spreadsheet, and the part about needing to crack a password to add a row to the spreadsheet, and the part about harvesting spare energy on the Internet, are wrong but so close to the truth that it’s hard to tell (at first) if it’s satire or an ignorant person’s naive understanding of what Bitcoin actually is.

  2. I was buying it till HTTP….Then, I was like, hashed what?! Based on the replies, that’s where every geeky type stopped reading and had to correct the internet. Once I got passed that, I got a giggle.

  3. You know, the thing about HTTP fueling cryptocurrency sounds preposterous, but we’re careening alarmingly close to an actual future where all web sites siphon off CPU cycles with Javascript mining trojans.

  4. Emlyn O’Regan To an extent, I completely agree. I worry about abuse.

I forgot to link articles that mention FF and Chrome extensions that housed mining code along with the functionality you were actually trying to gain…. Toolbar Hell 2.0

If all web sites start stealing my CPU resources for mining Bitcoin, I’m switching back to the Gopher protocol. Anyone who doesn’t cater to my demands for Gopher services will not be getting any of my business.

  6. Chad Alan probably, but I personally don’t know of any.

If anyone were to seriously try to revive Gopher, they’d have to use VPN to secure it, I doubt anyone has bothered extending Gopher with TLS.

Now that I am saying this, it might be a fun project to set up my own Gopher server and make it accessible through the TOR network.
