  1. I’m only looking at the mobile figures here Emlyn O’Regan so the browser type doesn’t really matter. Chrome on iOS === Mobile Safari. The benchmark exercises a series of Javascript apps on the hardware using the fastest browser for that hardware. The result is that the iPhone 8 onwards is substantially faster than any in the Android world. The Snapdragon 845 in the Samsung s9 matches the iPhone 7.

  2. Emlyn O’Regan I’ll take suggestions for an alternative benchmark but I know that this one exercises fairly typical behaviour of webapps.

    I don’t think quibbling over benchmarks is going to change much. The Apple CPU powered phones are measured as being literally several times as fast at JavaScript execution as competing Android units.

    This discrepancy needs to be either explained or Android needs to step up. Every release of the iPhone in recent years has included significant increases in compute power.

  3. BTW, I have a feeling, that JavaScript performance in the Android is not so good, because OS never gives the entire CPU tasks to the browser. Android, unlike iOS, is a true multitasking OS.

  4. That may be true. In theory it should be easy to prove too.

    I’m thinking though that Apple are doing something impressive with their own chips that are leaving the other chip manufacturers in the dust.

  5. Vlad Markov the idea might have merit. Certainly it’s been long rumoured. They did it once before when they switched to Intel in the first place.

    The reason why I’m not holding my breath is that Apple have shown relatively little interest in the Mac since it became a phone manufacturer. The Mac remains an important product but it’s not that big a deal to the company web you compare it to iPhone sales.

    So I’m not expecting an A chip in a MacBook any time soon. It almost seems like a backward step. What I am expecting is to see more capable mobile devices that can supplant the need for laptops for most of their target audience (who are not developers).

    I’m willing to be wrong on this.

  6. In my opinion, we at the point, when we could/should switch to the module structure for laptops. Spending every 2-3 years so much money is very painful. Unfortunately, no one does the better job with notebooks than Apple. Regarding phones, I don’t know the right answer. I am not ready to pay so much money for the new gadgets.

  7. Andres Soolo I am ready to dump Mac OS, all together. Unfortunately, I can’t find the hardware manufacturer, who can produce the quality hardware. I need an aluminum case preferably with the magnetic power connector. However, I can use the USB-C with the magnetic connectors. Also, I would love to have the SD cards on my laptops. Regarding OS, pretty much any Linux would be capable of serving my needs.

  8. Vlad Markov: Some recent Chromebooks have pretty nice mechanical constructions and more or less passable electronics inside. Unfortunately, you’ll need plenty of tinkering to get one to function as something resembling a proper laptop.

  9. Vlad Markov: Clearly, Apple is holding a monopoly position in the market of quality laptops. Could we get an antitrust action going that would encourage appearance of viable competitors?

  10. Andres Soolo This is a market driven solution. Antitrust will not solve the problem. For example, Asus has a very nice idea to copy some aspects of Apple but using the plug for the power-outlets which are completely screwing up everything they did before that. Because the second you put your laptop in the bed, the plug will start bending aluminum case.

  11. Magnesium should be much much more expensive, super light and very strong metal, however it has very low ignition temperature 473°C unbelievably flammable with very high burning temperature 2200°C. With recent batteries screw ups, I would be very cautious to use it anywhere.
